This societal complicity not only undermines the law but also emboldens those who continue to demand dowry, often leading to tragic consequences including harassment and violence against brides.
The narrative, however, is not without its beacons of hope. Education and awareness are powerful tools that have begun to reshape thoughts and actions. Non-governmental organizations, educational campaigns, and even popular media are playing significant roles in highlighting the adverse effects of dowry and promoting gender equality.
Initiatives that focus on educating girls and empowering women financially and socially can shift the traditional narrative. By increasing female literacy and employment, societies can reduce the perceived economic ‘burden’ of daughters and redefine their roles beyond the confines of marriage and dowry.
